Your Vehicle Has Been Damaged or Stolen. Now What?
- Contact the police. Do not discuss the details of the accident with anyone but the police.
- Keep a pen and paper in your vehicle so you can:
- Write down what happened
- Make a diagram of the events and damage sustained to the vehicles
- Note the weather and road conditions
- Indicate if you noticed the smell of alcohol or observed any unusual behaviour
- Consider keeping a disposable camera in your car so you can take photos at the scene.
- Exchange names, addresses, telephone numbers, insurance company information and policy numbers with all involved parties, including any passengers or witnesses.
- Get the licence plate number of anyone who won't cooperate.
- Don't sign anything, discuss liability or accept fault with others involved or with witnesses.
- Report your claim to:
- Your independent insurance broker during regular business hours, or
- The Economical Insurance Group's 24-hour emergency claims service
- If you are eligible for a rental vehicle, your broker or claims service representative will help make the arrangements.
Quebec - For accidents involving two or more vehicles and no injuries, a joint report must be completed. For all other auto claims, follow the steps above.
